Ryanair hand luggage

Charging for carry-on luggage: Legal or illegal?

In recent months we have read hundreds of news stories about how, for some time now, Ryanair was going to start charging for your hand luggage on all its Low Cost flights. That it was only going to allow a small backpack that you can carry on your person, but… is that true? Can we no longer take our hand luggage with us? Will we have to check it in? At Mapeha we want to answer all your questions.

It is true that until now, airlines such as Ryanair, which offered super low-cost flights, did not allow you to take your hand luggage with you, but now, the rules of the game have changed.

A ruling has just been issued stating that all flights from Spain or to Spain allow customers to bring their hand luggage on board, regardless of the airline.

So we are celebrating. At Mapeha we love knowing that we can continue travelling with you anywhere in the world regardless of the flight or destination you have. That is because Mapeha is a very light 50-litre backpack, which is accepted as hand luggage on the vast majority of airlines around the world.

But we still want to give you some tips for when you are going to travel, to make sure that you can take your Le sac de Mapeha on the plane without having to check it in and without having any kind of problem.

Below, we remind you of the 8 basic tips that we always give you for packing your hand luggage so that you don't forget anything and don't get into trouble:

  • Make a list: Don't pack your suitcase on the fly - make sure you don't forget anything!!
  • Organize your outfits: if you plan the clothes you want to wear, it is a way of not taking extra clothes that end up in our Mapeha taking up space.
  • Small toiletry bag: This is a basic item, so remember to save a small space for it and only take the essential things.
  • Remember your shoes: keep in mind that they are the items that will take up the most space in your hand luggage, so think carefully about what shoes you want to take, in order to optimize the space as much as possible.
  • Dirty clothes: Be careful! When we pack our suitcases, we only think about going, not about coming back. And as a general rule, dirty clothes take up more space, so take some bags with you to better organize your return.
  • Wear the things that take up the most space: one of the best pieces of advice we can give you at Mapeha when packing your hand luggage is to wear the clothes that take up the most space or bulk, such as rain boots, coats, etc.
  • Don't be fooled: when boarding, remember that the rules of the game have changed, and you can no longer be charged for carrying your hand luggage instead of a small backpack. As Ryanair is the airline that most often does this, we want you to be safe and not have any problems, but in case this happens, the way to act is as follows:

It's very simple, you just have to send them an email demanding that they return your money due to the abusiveness of the clause based on rulings No. 787/2022, attaching the necessary documentation such as ID, tickets, reservations...
